Best web design agencies in the UK
desk research from public sources- Illustrate Digital and Atomic Smash lead because their work is easiest to check and they publish the most about cost, but their entry points sit far apart: a full build from £40,000 at one, monthly retainers at the other.
- Toast Design and Edge Studio publish the lowest build prices, with WordPress builds from £2,500 at Toast and multipage sites from around £3,500 to £9,000 at Edge.
- Torchbox has the strongest measured results on the page and publishes no prices, and its client base is almost entirely charities, NHS bodies and the public sector.
- Atomic Smash states it does not build new websites, so check each agency's actual brief before shortlisting.

Prices checked October 2026. Estimates say so in the price itself. How we choose agencies: our method.
How we picked these
Eligible agencies are UK-based and offer web design as a core service. Seven qualified for this page, and they differ in size and sector: from a five-person Sheffield studio to a team of more than 100 in Bristol. The entries say who each web design company suits.
The order follows fit first: how central web design is to what the agency sells, and how well its clients and work suit a typical UK buyer. After that we looked at what each agency can show, meaning case studies with measured results, published prices, named teams and stated support terms. This is desk research from public sources only, and we have not hired any of them. More on how we choose agencies.
1. Illustrate Digital

Illustrate Digital is a Cardiff-based WordPress and UX agency of about 17 people, with Bristol and London offices. It works mainly for banks, insurers, law firms and Welsh public bodies. It suits regulated organisations with the budget for a full build that want user research and ISO 27001-certified delivery, from £40,000 per build.
What they do best
- Regulated-sector work. The portfolio of 25 case studies includes Admiral, GoCompare, Burges Salmon, Foot Anstey, Pepper Money and Welsh Government services.
- Results with a baseline. Foot Anstey rose 146 places to first in the Legal Digital 200 site-speed ranking after its rebuild, and Hodge Bank reported 76% more savings applications.
- A stated way of working. It publishes a six-step method, a named team and lead times, and its growth retainers include a dedicated client partner and a quarterly review.
Where they fall short
- A high entry price. It sets a minimum for a full design and build that is the highest published floor in this group, so smaller projects are out of scope.
- Unconfirmed award. Its WP Engine Agency of the Year (EMEA) 2025 banner was not confirmed on a recognised organiser’s list.
2. Atomic Smash

Atomic Smash is a Bristol agency of about 11 people and a Certified B Corp since 2023. It works on WordPress, WooCommerce and Shopify, and takes over existing sites to improve them on published monthly retainers from £950 per month + VAT. It suits a marketing team with a stable site that wants planned monthly improvements, support and reporting on a fixed budget.
What they do best
- Published packages. Three monthly packages are listed with inclusions, alongside a day rate.
- Account cover. Each client gets a pod led by a client partner with weekly or fortnightly status calls, and support tickets get a response within an hour in office hours.
- Measured gains. The ForrestBrown case study reports its average performance score up 61% after launch, bounce rate down 58% and session time up 74% year on year.
Where they fall short
- No new builds. Its WordPress page states that it does not build new websites, so a from-scratch build means hiring another agency first.
- A dated portfolio. The newest case study is from December 2024, and award claims could not be confirmed on an organiser’s site.
3. Toast Design

Toast Design is a Banbury design agency of about 15 people, founded in 1997. It builds WordPress and WooCommerce sites and produces branding, packaging and report design, mainly for food and drink and charity clients. It suits small and mid-sized organisations that want priced work and a direct line to the designers, with a base rate of £60 an hour and WordPress builds from £2,500.
What they do best
- A full price list. It gives minimum charges for WordPress, custom WordPress, WooCommerce and brand identity work, and projects are quoted at a fixed cost against a fixed scope.
- Direct contact with the makers. Clients work directly with designers and developers with no account managers, and its SiteCare terms say 95% of tickets are answered within two business hours.
- A large portfolio. It lists 133 items, including The National Archives, Kohler and the Elton John AIDS Foundation.
Where they fall short
- No measured results. Its portfolio pages describe the work but give no outcomes, so a buyer cannot judge impact from the site alone.
- No published process. There is no step-by-step process, and no award from an organiser’s list was found.
4. Torchbox

Torchbox is an employee-owned B Corp of more than 100 people in Bristol that created the Wagtail CMS. It builds websites, intranets and campaigns for charities, NHS bodies and public-sector teams. It suits nonprofits and public bodies that want Python-based open-source platforms with digital marketing from the same team.
What they do best
- Measured outcomes. Breast Cancer Now’s virtual challenge raised £1.48m and generated 24k leads, 37% above target, and the Guy’s and St Thomas’ intranet recorded almost 500,000 views in its first week.
- A deep, current archive. The work page lists 136 case studies, with posts dated up to September 2026.
- A named team. The team directory names engineers, designers, delivery managers and client partners.
Where they fall short
- No prices or process. It publishes no prices or process steps.
- Narrow client base. It works almost entirely for mission-driven clients, so commercial brands have little relevant reference work.
5. Edge Studio

Edge Studio is a Sheffield web design and development studio of five named people, founded in 2016. It combines custom builds, branding and SEO for charities, universities and small businesses. It suits organisations that want published price bands (multipage sites from around £3,500 to £9,000, ex. VAT) and direct contact with the designer and developer.
What they do best
- Price and process clarity. It publishes price ranges by site type, a 20% deposit with phased payments and a six-stage process, and prints its company number and address.
- Named clients. They include the University of Sheffield, Wren Kitchens and Citizens Advice Sheffield.
- A named delivery team. An account manager, lead developer and content writer are listed.
Where they fall short
- No per-client numbers. Case studies carry no per-client figures; the only numbers are agency-wide, such as 97% client retention.
- Remote working. The team works from home offices, with a shared Sheffield space for meetings only on request.
- Unconfirmed recognition. Its Awwwards and CSS Design Awards recognition from 2020 to 2021 was not confirmed on the organisers’ sites.
6. Imaginaire

Imaginaire is a Nottingham agency of about eight people, with an office in Dubai, that builds Shopify and Shopify Plus stores and runs ecommerce SEO and PPC for the same clients. It suits retailers and wholesalers with a build budget at or above its £30,000 floor that want search work from the same team.
What they do best
- An anchored result. Parkside Tiles conversion rose from 1.4% on its previous site to 4.6% after the Shopify rebuild.
- Paid media results. Alert Electrical revenue rose 20.77% in three months on the same ad budget, although that figure has no absolute baseline.
- A named team. It names its eight-person team with roles and describes how it works in stages.
Where they fall short
- A high floor and undated work. Its price floor is high for the size of team and its case studies are undated, so a buyer cannot tell how recent the Shopify work is.
- No retainer prices. Retainer and SEO fees are not published, and the only award on its about page is a shortlisting.
7. Opace

Opace is a Birmingham digital agency, trading since 2008, covering web builds on WordPress, Magento, Drupal and Laravel, ecommerce, SEO, PPC and AI search work. It names about seven staff. It suits small firms that want a monthly-fee website, from £50 per month, and larger retailers that need ecommerce development with SEO.
What they do best
- An accessible entry point. The pay-monthly plan starts at £50 per month, and a published Brindley Place address gives a buyer something concrete to check.
- Named accountability. Account managers, a lead developer and a quality manager are named, and a single point of accountability is promised.
- Ecommerce case studies. They include NatureSpot, Corcorans, Shedstore and SPI Lasers.
Where they fall short
- Results without context. Case study figures carry no baseline or time window, so a claim such as 500 page-one rankings for Shedstore cannot be sized.
- Missing rates and awards. The SEO and hourly rate quotes in the homepage text were not visible in our rendered check, and no awards were found.
Which one fits your project
| If you are | Pick | Because |
|---|---|---|
| A bank, insurer or law firm commissioning a full build | Illustrate Digital | UX research, regulated-sector clients and a published floor |
| A team with a live site that needs monthly improvements | Atomic Smash | Published retainers, named pod and one-hour support response |
| A small organisation that wants fixed-scope WordPress work | Toast Design | Published price list and no account-manager layer |
| A charity or NHS body building on an open-source platform | Torchbox | Wagtail creator and 136 case studies |
| A small business or charity that wants priced bands | Edge Studio | Published ranges and a direct line to the builders |
| A retailer rebuilding on Shopify with SEO from the same team | Imaginaire | Anchored conversion result and published floor |
| A small firm wanting a pay-monthly site | Opace | Monthly plan and wide platform range |
What web design services actually cost
The published price is rarely the whole bill. Illustrate Digital’s headline is “From £40,000 per build”, and its retainers are priced separately. Toast Design’s figures are minimum charges, and hosting and support plans are extra. Edge Studio’s bands are ex. VAT, and hosting and support are priced separately. Atomic Smash prices are monthly and assume a site already exists.
Before you compare quotes, check whether each of these is included or extra:
- Design depth. Template-based design and fully custom design are different jobs with different quotes.
- Content and photography. Copy and imagery often take as long as the build.
- Hosting and support. Edge Studio and Toast Design both price these on top of the build.
- Integrations. Booking, payments and ERP connections add development time.
- SEO and migration. Redirects and search planning are often scoped separately, and Imaginaire does not publish its SEO fees.
- VAT. Several agencies on this page quote ex. VAT.
As a rough guide (our estimate), a small-business site from a small UK studio costs a few thousand pounds, while a custom build from an established agency starts in the tens of thousands. Where an agency on this page publishes nothing, its entry above says so, and any figure we give is our estimate and not a quote.
FAQ
Look at finished sites in your own sector and ask what changed after launch. Then check what the quote covers, because design, build, content, hosting and support are often priced separately. Several agencies here publish price floors, which lets you rule agencies in or out before a call.
Published entry points on this page run from Toast Design's WordPress builds from £2,500, through Edge Studio's multipage sites from around £3,500 to £9,000, to Imaginaire's Shopify builds from £30,000 and Illustrate Digital's full builds from £40,000. Those are each agency's own labels; any wider market figure in this article is our estimate.
The terms overlap. Design covers layout, branding and user experience; development covers the build, integrations and hosting. Most agencies here do both, but Atomic Smash focuses on improving existing sites and Torchbox builds on its own Wagtail platform, so confirm what each will build.
Several can. Opace, Edge Studio, Imaginaire, Toast Design and Torchbox all list SEO alongside design. Ask whether the search work is planned before the layout is signed off, since site structure affects rankings.
